ABOUT SACRED HEART
The Amazing Math Race!
January 19, 2010On Tuesday, Feb. 16 the junior high students at Sacred Heart High School will be participating in "The Amazing Math Race".
"The Amazing Math Race" is based on the popular CBS television reality show "The Amazing Race". Students in grades seven and eight will team up in pairs to travel from country to country around the school, solving interesting and challanging math problems as they go. Grade nine students, who will represent and be stationed at each country, will judge the solutions to the math problems. After successfully completing each mathematical task, competitors will have their passport stamped and will get instructions on how their team must travel to their next destination. Just as in the reality television show, the first team to reach the final pit stop will be the official winners of "The Amazing Math Race".
"The Amazing Math Race" is a fun and educational activity that promotes teamwork in solving math challenges involving computations, spatial reasoning, logic, and physical math problems centered around many of the expected outcomes for the junior high math program. "The Amazing Math Race" allows students to be physically active as they travel to each country. Students are exposed to multiculturalism as each classroom is tranformed into the country it represents through music, decorations, dress, food, and general atmosphere. The activity also promotes community building in the school. "The Amazing Math Race" has been a huge hit in the past, and students are excited to participate in the event again this year.
