French Language

We are fortunate to live in a country with two official languages. At Sacred Heart we embrace the French language and have developed programmes in elementary school that will set students on their way to fluency.

Grades 1 and 2 Bilingual/Immersion Programme

This programme provides students with the opportunity to acquire strong language skills in both languages. Students are taught in French for half a day and in English for the other half day. Language skills and strategies as well as science themes, social studies and art are taught in both languages. Math, physical education, music and religion are taught in English.

This early, extensive, concentrated exposure to the two languages helps children to develop language skills common to both at the same time. The children use many different media to listen, speak, read and write in French and English to help them develop a strong linguistic foundation in both.

Grade 3 to 6

Grade 3 to 6 students have a 40-minute French class daily. A variety of methods and materials are implemented to enhance comprehension and fluency in speaking, listening, reading and writing French. Children are encouraged to speak only French inside the classroom. An extracurricular French Club is available for Grade 6 students after school.

This elementary French programme gives the students a very strong foundation.
